XXLMAG.com

I remember when Elliot Wilson hated Bloggers. Seemingly over night his website XXLmag.com has become one of the best Hip-Hop blog centres out there. SOHH.com has it's place for sure, but they'll never be able to compete with XXL's resources.

I disagree. XXL's blogs don't have the width or depth of SOHH's blogs.

SOHH covers music videos, media, gossip, R&B, and also cities such as New York, Atlanta, and now Houston. Even with SOHH smaller resources, each blog publishes every weekday and talks about stories that are too "small", "regional", or "niche" for general hip-hop news sites.

This means on SOHH Blogs you'll read and discuss stories that aren't being talked about anywhere else.

XXL is more personality focused, a strategy that I considered for SOHH blogs, but passed on. It doesn't scale - it won't work in the long term. For instance, 6 different personalities have written SOHH's Ya Heard blog, including myself, yet the blog hasn't missed a step and continues to grow in traffic.

Overall, SOHH Blogs reached 1.5 million pageviews per month after one year on the web. So, just SOHH's blog section is more popular than many of the second tier hip-hop news sites, including XXL.

I love SOHH.com's blogs. They've clearly paved the way for Blog centres within Hip-Hop, I just feel that as a fan XXL seems to have greater resources and is geuninely surprising me at how on point it is. SOHH does something different that needs doing, you're doing a hell of a job over there because it's faster, it's more interactive and it's more generally more entertaining but XXL's new direction is refreshing as a top down view of Hip-Hop on the internet.
